Irish band U2 may perform on the new national stadium Lia Manoliu in September, if talks with the band's promoter have any results, the head of the City Hall's investment department, Bogdan Hreapca, told Mediafax.
"We know for sure we will have a concert in September that will gather about 60,000 people. There are talks with a U2 promoter. If it's not U2, it will certainly be one of the best five-six bands, because the people of Bucharest and not only deserve such an event," Hreapca said.
U2, made of Bono (vocals and guitar), The Edge (guitar, keyboards and vocals), Adam Clayton (bass) and Larry Mullen Jr. (drums and percussion), was set up in 1976, when the members were yet teenagers with vague knowledge of music.
Their success as a live band was even higher than the one achieved with studio albums, until the 1987 album 'The Joshua Tree' made the band go from "heroes to superstars," as Rolling Stone wrote.
The band's most recent world tour, called "360° Tour," promotes their 12th studio album, 'No Line On The Horizon,' released on March 2, 2009. According to specialists, this is the most expensive tour in history, but the Irish band's strategy to enlarge the stage with the help of a huge rotating platform., a first in the field, had the expected results. Every concert had proceeds of about seven million dollars, being attended by an average of 70,000 people - another record set in the field.

Trupa irlandeză U2 ar putea concerta în luna septembrie pe noul stadion naţional "Lia Manoliu", în cazul în care discuţiile cu promotorul formaţiei se vor concretiza, a declarat pentru Mediafax directorul Direcţiei de Investiţii din Primăria Generală a Municipiului Bucureşti, Bogdan Hreapcă.
"În septembrie ştim sigur că va fi un concert care va aduna aproximativ 60.000 de oameni. Există discuţii cu un promotor al formaţiei U2. Dacă nu va fi U2 va fi cu siguranţă un band din cele mai bune cinci-şase trupe, pentru că bucureştenii şi nu numai merită un asemenea eveniment", a declarat, Bogdan Hreapcă.
Trupa U2, formată din Bono (voce şi chitară), The Edge (chitară, clape şi voce), Adam Clayton (chitară bas) şi Larry Mullen Jr. (tobe şi percuţie), a fost fondată în 1976, când membrii acesteia erau încă adolescenţi fără cunoştinţe aprofundate de muzică.
Succesul de care s-au bucurat ca trupă live a fost chiar mai mare decât cel obţinut de pe urma albumelor vândute, până ce discul din 1987, "The Joshua Tree", a ridicat statutul formaţiei de la "eroi la superstaruri", după cum a apreciat revista Rolling Stone.
Cel mai recent turneu mondial al grupului, intitulat "360° Tour", promovează cel de-al 12-lea album de studio al U2, "No Line On The Horizon", lansat pe 2 martie 2009. Potrivit specialiştilor, acest turneu este cel mai scump din istorie, însă strategia trupei irlandeze de mărire a capacităţii scenice, cu ajutorul unei uriaşe scene mobile rotative, o premieră în domeniu, a avut rezultatele scontate. Fiecare concert a generat încasări medii de 7 milioane de dolari, fiind urmărit, în medie, de aproape 70.000 de spectatori - un nou record în domeniu.
