Environment Minister Laszlo Borbely thinks Romania has too many bears. At the moment, there are 7,000 bears, almost half the total number in the entire Europe. The minister is upset that bears have turned into domestic animals, walking around in mountain region towns and sometimes even getting into people's homes.
"The bear has become a local animal. You go there, shake hands with it and go on. (...) We have over 7,000 bears. I think half the bears in Europe are in Romania," the minister said, quoted by Agerpres. He added that these animals seem to have demanded "political asylum" in Romania, where they feel very well.
Borbely admitted that the bears have become a problem because they have bred in large numbers and can only be hunted in a limited number because they are protected by law.
Given that the treaty with the European Union for bear protection cannot be changed, the best solution would be to relocate some specimens abroad, the minister of environment said.
"I am a friend of animals and I'm not in favor of shooting them, but what goes on right now is dangerous. We tried to export bears to countries such as Germany and I was surprised to see that they weren't interested. We should try to export more," Borbely added.
According to the minister, between 250 and 300 bears can be hunted in Romania every year.

Romania is the only European country where bears are sold on the Internet. Those who want to buy a bear cub have to pay a few thousands of Euro. Bear cubs are available in various kinds, both male and female. The only thing you have to do is convince current owners that you can offer proper conditions to the animals, according to Antena 3.

Specialists say however that there is no chance the bears get to neighboring countries' forests. "The export can be done only as trophies. You cannot export problem bears... but those that are not used to man," said Ovidiu Ionescu, head of the Forest Arrangement and Research Institute of Brasov.
Brasov hunters have found a solution to keep bears in the forest: they bought them chocolate. Not one or two, but 40 tons. Until now, the initiative proved successful - in the last few days, the bears' trips to garbage bins in the town of Brasov were less frequent.

"Ursul a ajuns un animal local. Mergi, dai mâna cu el şi mergi mai departe. (...) Avem peste 7.000 de urşi. Cred că jumătate din urşii din Europa sunt în România', a declarat ministrul Mediului, citat de Agerpres, adăugând că aceste animale par să fi cerut 'azil politic' în ţara noastră, unde se simt foarte bine.
Borbely Laszlo a admis că urşii au devenit o problemă în condiţiile în care s-au înmulţit foarte mult şi nu pot fi vânaţi decât într-un număr limitat deoarece sunt ocrotiţi de lege.
Avându-se în vedere că tratatul semnat de ţara noastră cu Uniunea Europeană în privinţa protejării acestor animale nu poate fi modificat, cea mai bună soluţie ar fi trimiterea în străinătate a câtorva exemplare, a spus ministrul Mediului.
'Eu sunt un prieten al animalelor şi nu sunt pentru a veni şi a-i împuşca, dar ce e acum e deja periculos. Am încercat să exportăm urşii în ţări precum Germania şi chiar m-am mirat că nu sunt interesaţi. Ar trebui să încercăm să exportăm mai mult', a conchis Borbely Laszlo.
Potrivit ministrului, anual în România pot fi vânaţi între 250 şi 300 de urşi.

România este singura ţară europeană în care se vând urşi pe internet. Câteva mii de euro trebuie să scoată din buzunar cei care vor să îşi cumpere un pui de urs. Ursuleţii sunt la alegere - fetiţe, băieţei, cu guler mai mare sau mai mic. Totul este să îi convingi pe proprietarii actuali că poţi să le oferi condiţii bune, informeaza Antena 3.

Specialiştii spun însă că nu este nicio şansă ca urşii să ajungă în pădurile vecinilor. "Exportul se poate face doar sub formă de trofee. Nu se pot exporta urşi problemă... ci cei care nu sunt obisnuiţi cu omul.", a declarat Ovidiu Ionescu, director Institutul de cercetari si amenajari silvice (ICAS) Braşov.
Vânătorii braşoveni au găsit o soluţie pentru a-i ţine pe urşi în pădure: le-au cumpărat ciocolată. Nu una, nu două, ci 40 de tone. Până acum iniţiativa a dat roade - în ultimele zile, urşii au coborât mai rar la tomberoanele de gunoi.
