A hard to understand tragedy happened in Mihaileni commune, Rascani department, Republic of Moldova. A baby died drowned during christening on Friday evening. The one to blame seems to be the priest, who did not cover the child's face when immersing him in water. Police are looking for the priest to find out his side of the story, but the man has disappeared and is nowhere to be found in the commune, according to Publika.md. A criminal file on charges of manslaughter was opened against the man, who risks three years in jail if found guilty.
The child's parents say the baby was immersed into the christening bowl several times by father Valentin Taralunga. Not paying attention or because of negligence, the priest did not cover the baby's face to prevent him from swallowing water. In a while, the one month and a half-old baby fell sick and his parents took him to the hospital right away. He died on the way there and medical examinations afterward confirmed that he had drowned.
The child's parents say they realized that their baby was not doing well and asked the priest to stop baptism, but he didn't listen to them. "We told the priest: father, the child is not doing well. He said we weren't going to interrupt the service. The child started foaming around the mouth and when we got to the hospital, he was already dead. In the autopsy, doctors found out the child was perfectly healthy, but that he had water in his lungs," the child's father said.
Scared with the consequences that the incident might have on him, the priest fled the commune and does not answer his phone. The family also filed a complaint against him with the prosecutor's office.
A press secretary of the Moldova Metropolitan Church, Vadim Cheibas, says the church does not recall any similar cases in Moldova before. The practice father Taralunga used at the child's baptism is different from the traditional one, said church secretary Ioan Cosoi.
