Cosmetics market will be less exposed to the financial crisis’ effects, as investments in cosmetics are on short term. Romanian cosmetics, which have lived after the 1989 Revolution in the shadow of the international famous brands, can gain now ground, through low prices and a varied offer, close to the international offer in terms of quality. In the current economic context, on a market which in 2008 reached a 40 million Euro value, the Romania consumer will pay much more attention to the choices made and will invest in quality products, the general manager of Farmec Mihaela Turdean stated in exclusivity for Bucharest Herald.

Bucharest Herald: L’Oreal closed down two factories in Europe: in Great Britain and in Monacco. On the other hand a GfK study reveals that the Eastern  Europeans, among which the Romanians buy in this period more expensive products and in larger quantities. What is Romanian consumer’s behaviour in relation to cosmetics acquisition, during the financial crisis?

Mihaela Turdea: Cosmetics acquisition does not represent a long term investment and this is why the cosmetics market is less exposed to the effects of the crisis, compared with other industires. This does not mean that we will not see changes in the consumption behaviour, not necessarily in relation to the demand drop, but especially regarding the focus on quality, on rational choices, in the advantage of impulsive choices. The consumer will chose more secure products which have proved their quality in time, will count thus on the loyality to the brand.

BH: How was Farmec affected by the crisis and by which percentage have the sales dropped lately?

Mihaela Turdean: We have had good results so far, for instance in December 2008, the turnover reached 2.1 million Euro, a 23.5 per cent increase on November and the turnover posted at the end of 2008, was of  24.5 million Euro. This year, considering the market conditions, our estimates are conservative, more precisely we have planned a 5 per cent turnover growth on the internal market.

BH: Do Romanians tend to save money in the case of optional products to invest them in higher quality compulsory cosmetics?  Who saves more money: men or women?

Mihaela Turdean: In the past years the development of the cosmetics market and the offer diversification have determined the consumers to make numerous choices. On the other hand today we have a selective consumer, who can see a good price- quality ratio and has well defined preferences, due to this market testing. When we talk about cosmetics it is hard to decide what is compulsory and what is not, because each product is special. It is obvious that we need cleaning milk every day,but we cannot give up on the hair reconstruction mask or on the anti – strech marks body lotion, which could seam too much for some of us, but which are really necessary.

BH:
What are the best selling Farmec products right now?

Mihaela Turdean: Our products are made according to original formulas, obtained after laboratory researches, are based on natural ingredients, are accessible and they cover a wide range, from beauty and maintenance to products used for the treatment of dermatological issues.

Right now Farmec onws a quantity share of 25.77 per cent on the facial cosmetics segment, 30.37 per cent on the cleansing segment and 9.05 per cent on the body cosmetics segment. A part of Farmec production is exported, our products are present in Europe, Asia and North America.

Gerovital brand covers 12.4 per cent of the complexion cosmetics, while Doina milk, a traditional product,  but in high demand, has a 15.33 per cent share of the facial cleansing products market in Romania. Gerovital Plant, Aslavital and Farmec brands are also successful.

BH: What was the value of the cosmetics market in 2008  and what are your estimates regarding its value this year?

Mihaela Turdean: From the information we have right now, in 2008, the value of the facial cosmetics market exceeded 40 million Euro. As regards this year it is still premature to make estimates related to the entire market. (to be continued).

Bucharest Herald:
L’Oreal a inchis doua fabrici in Europa: in Marea Britanie si Monaco; pe de alta parte  un studiu GfK evidentiaza faptul ca est europenii, printre care si romanii cumpara in aceasta perioada produse in cantitati mai mari si mai scumpe. Care este comportamentul consumatorilor romani, in ceea ce priveste achizitia de cosmetice, in aceasta perioada de criza financiara?

Mihaela Turdea:

BH: Exista tendinta romanilor de a economisi bani in cazul produselor optionale pentru a-i investi in produse cosmetice indispensabile, de calitate superioara?
