This year, five Romanians will carry the Olympic torch to the London Olympic Games, in what was called by organizers “Your moment to shine.” Cristina Bogdan, Adrian Hadean, Bogdan Cismariu, Marius Radu and Catalin Stelian were chosen by Samsung, through national contest “Life-changing passions,” to join the other ambassadors from all over the world in carrying the Olympic torch for 70 days through Great Britain, in 1,000 towns, so that local communities can share the Olympic spirit. In an exclusive interview to Bucharest Herald, Cristina Bogdan, 35, a PhD university lecture with the Bucharest University School of Letters, Communication Science Department, talked about when she was nominated and about what will happen in England.

BH: How did you learn about being nominated in this contest organized by Samsung?

C.B: One evening last fall, I got a phone call and was told that my story (written by a former student of the Communication Science Department where I teach, blogger Alexandru Ciuca) was selected from among a few hundred stories, to take part in the final selection of the contest “Life changing passions,” organized by Samsung (global partner of the 2012 London Olympic Games), to appoint the five Romanian Olympic torch bearers. I was amazed and obviously very pleased, especially that I was nominated by a former student (and I believe there cannot be a bigger joy for a teacher than to feel that they are a beautiful memory in their students’ emotional memory). I have experienced similar emotions in the spring of 2010, when I was chosen Bologna Professor in a contest held by 16 student organizations all over the country to appoint the “cool teachers” (as the promotion campaign slogan said). But this time, the stake was a lot higher because it’s a global phenomenon (the Olympic Games), whose values coagulate the interest of people belonging to different cultures, languages and religious backgrounds.

BH: What does carrying the Olympic torch for the 2012 London Olympic Games mean to you?

C.B: It is a real honor to me to be able to carry the Olympic torch for the 2012 London Olympic Games. But I will not be there for myself, but for my students from the Communication Science Department of the Bucharest University School of Letters, who chose to send a representative to this event. And I will be there on behalf of a guild that I believe is nowadays much too criticized in the Romanian space (often unfairly so): the guild of teachers.

I will try to be a mirror to include all the faces, voices, ideas, feelings of my students and to carry the Olympic torch as if in my heart there are beating the hearts of all those who believed I can represent them. In fact, teachers must be torchbearers every day of their life and to pass on to next generations the questions, amazement, wish of finding answers to existential problems. So I will take part in the 2012 Olympic Games with everything I am: a teacher who embraces students with mind and heart every day.

BH: What exactly does being an Olympic torchbearer imply? What will you have to do?

C.B: In this edition of the Olympic Games, the Olympic torch will be carried for 70 days all over Great Britain, in 1,000 towns, so that local communities can share the Olympic spirit, a spirit of an authentic meetings between different cultures and civilizations (which is proven by the colors of the Olympic flag, against the white background: red, blue, green, yellow and black – so that every nation can find at least one of their national flag colors), but also of recognition of humanity’s constant wish to surpass its limits, given the Olympic Games slogan: Citius, Altius, Fortius (Faster, Higher, Stronger).

Every torchbearer will go 300 meters in what was called by the organizers “Your moment to shine.” The itineraries have already been decided, I have to run a segment of Broadstairs town (Kent, south-eastern England) on July 19, 2012. And I am very proud and happy that, although very far from Romania, I will not be alone, but accompanied by all my dear students, because some of them, who are doing master’s studies or working in England, will come there to be next to me.

BH: How do you feel thinking that you will bear the Olympic torch that so many world sports and culture figures have carried over the years?

C.B: I find it extraordinary that Samsung had this idea to discover common people, less visible than the overwhelming personalities or stars of the moment, but people who are trying, at their level, to contribute moral, spiritual or actual beautification of their communities. It is an honor to carry a symbol that so many millions of people know and appreciate. Moreover, to me as a teacher (I want to emphasize this dimension because this is what defines me the best and this is the reason I was voted and chosen), it is an honor to take part in the Olympic torch bearing race, given that the person who “brought back to life” this extraordinary even in 1896, Frenchman Pierre de Coubertin, was himself a pedagogue and historian.

Anul acesta, cinci români vor purta Torţa Olimpică, în cadrul Olimpiadei de la Londra,  în ceea ce a fost denumit de către organizatori „Your moment to shine”. Cristina Bogdan, Adrian Hădean, Bogdan Cismariu, Marius Radu şi Cătălin Stelian au fost desemnaţi de Samsung, prin concursul naţional „Pasiuni care schimbă vieţi”, să se alăture celorlalţi ambasadori din întreaga lume pentru a purta Flacăra Olimpică timp de 70 de zile, pe teritoriul Marii Britanii, în 1000 de oraşe, astfel încât comunităţile locale să se poată împărtăşi din spiritul olimpic. În exclusivitate pentru Bucharest Herald, Cristina Bogdan, 35 de ani, Lector universitar doctor în cadrul Facultăţii de Litere a Universităţii din Bucureşti, la Departamentul de Ştiinţele Comunicării, a povestit momentul nominalizării, dar şi ceea ce urmează să se întâmple în Anglia.

BH: Cum aţi aflat despre nominalizarea în acest concurs organizat de Samsung?

C.B:Într-o seară din toamna anului trecut am primit un telefon şi am fost anunţată că povestea mea (scrisă de un fost student al Departamentului de Ştiinţele Comunicării unde sunt profesoară, bloggerul Alexandru Ciucă) a fost selectată dintre câteva sute de poveşti pentru a participa la selecţia finală a concursului „Pasiuni care schimbă vieţi”, organizat de Samsung (partener global al Jocurilor Olimpice Londra 2012) pentru desemnarea celor 5 purtători români de Torţă Olimpică. Am fost uimită şi evident foarte încântată, mai ales că propunerea venea din partea unui fost student (şi cred că nu poate exista o bucurie mai mare a unui profesor decât să simtă că a rămas ca o amintire frumoasă în memoria afectivă a studenţilor lui). Am mai trecut prin emoţii similare în primăvara lui 2010 când am fost aleasă Profesor Bologna în urma unui concurs organizat de 16 organizaţii studenţeşti din ţară pentru desemnarea „profesorilor tari” (cum suna sloganul campaniei de promovare). De data aceasta însă, miza era mult mai mare, întrucât era vorba de un fenomen global (Jocurile Olimpice), ale cărui valori coagulau interesul oamenilor aparţinând unor culturi, limbi şi religii diferite.

BH: Ce înseamnă pentru dvs. să purtaţi Torţa Olimpică la Jocurile Olimpice de la Londra 2012?

C.B: Este o adevărată onoare pentru mine să pot purta Flacăra Olimpică la Jocurile Olimpice de la Londra, 2012. Însă eu nu voi fi acolo în numele meu, ci în numele studenţilor mei de la Departamentul de Ştiinţele Comunicării al Facultăţii de Litere din Universitatea din Bucureşti, care au ales să-şi trimită un reprezentant în acest context. Şi în numele unei bresle care astăzi este, în opinia mea, mult prea hulită în spaţiul românesc (şi adesea pe nedrept): breasla profesorilor.

Voi încerca să fiu o oglindă care să cuprindă în ea chipurile, glasurile, ideile, sentimentele studenţilor mei şi să port Flacăra Olimpică ca şi cum în inima mea ar bate, la unison, toate inimile celor care au avut încredere că îi pot reprezenta. În fapt, profesorul trebuie să fie un purtător de torţă în fiecare zi a existenţei lui şi să treacă generaţiilor care vin întrebarea, uimirea, dorinţa de a căuta răspunsuri la problemele existenţiale. Aşa încât, voi participa la Jocurile Olimpice 2012 cu tot ceea ce sunt: un profesor care îşi îmbrăţişează, în fiecare zi când este la catedră, cu mintea şi inima, studenţii.

BH: Ce presupune mai exact faptul că aţi fost desemnată să purtaţi Torţa Olimpică? Ce va trebui să faceţi efectiv?

C.B: La această ediţie a Jocurilor Olimpice, Flacăra Olimpică va fi purtată timp de 70 de zile pe teritoriul Marii Britanii, în 1000 de oraşe, astfel încât comunităţile locale să se poată împărtăşi din spiritul olimpic, care este unul al întâlnirii autentice între culturi şi civilizaţii diferite (dovadă culorile care apar pe steagul olimpic al cărui fond este alb – roşu, albastru, verde, galben şi negru – astfel încât fiecare naţiune să poată regăsi cel puţin una dintre culorile prezente pe drapelul naţional), dar şi al recunoaşterii dorinţei constante a umanităţii de surmontare a limitelor, dacă ne gândim la deviza Jocurilor Olimpice: Citius, Altius, Fortius („Mai repede, mai sus, mai puternic”).

Fiecare purtător de Torţă va parcurge o distanţă de 300 de metri, în ceea ce a fost denumit de către organizatori „Your moment to shine”. Traseele au fost deja stabilite, mie îmi revine un parcurs în oraşul Broadstairs (comitatul Kent, din sud-estul Angliei), în data de 19 iulie 2012. Şi sunt foarte mândră şi bucuroasă că, deşi foarte departe de România, nu voi fi singură, ci însoţită tot de studenţii mei dragi, pentru că unii dintre ei, aflaţi la masterate sau la muncă în Anglia, vor veni să îmi fie alături.

BH: Cum vă simţiţi la gândul că veţi purta Torţa Olimpică pe care au   purtat-o, de-a lungul timpului, multe dintre personalităţile culturii şi ale sportului mondial?

C.B: Mi se pare extraordinar că Samsung a avut această idee de a descoperi oamenii obişnuiţi, mult mai puţin vizibili decât personalităţile covârşitoare sau vedetele momentului, dar care încearcă, de la nivelul lor, să contribuie la înfrumuseţarea morală, spirituală sau concretă a comunităţilor din care fac parte. Este o onoare să porţi un simbol pe care atâtea milioane de oameni îl recunosc şi apreciază. În plus, pentru mine ca profesor (ţin să accentuez această dimensiune pentru că este ceea ce mă defineşte cel mai bine şi pentru că datorită ei am fost votată şi aleasă) este o onoare să particip la cursa de purtare a Flăcării Olimpice, cu gândul la cel care a „reînviat”, în 1896, această manifestare extraordinară, Pierre de Coubertin, el însuşi pedagog şi istoric francez.
