Former EU parliamentary president Hans-Gert Pöttering sees European principles threatened in Romania. In future, Europe should be more cautious in admitting new members, he told Deutsche Welle. 

“If important constitutional principles are violated in Romania, it is the right and duty of the states, peoples, and politicians in the European Union to intervene. The principle of non-interference can no longer apply. Every state, every country, every people is committed to the principles that unite us, such as human dignity, human rights, democracy, legal order, freedom and peace. “

Romania was admitted to the EU 'too soon,” in Pöttering's view. “ If we allow these principles to be violated, then we are cutting away at the foundations of the European Union. The historical innovation of the European Union is that we are a community of law. The law has the power; the power does not have the law, as was previously the rule throughout the history of Europe and what led to all the wars. Today, we have a legal order that we must defend with all constitutional, democratic and free means.” 

The European official doesn’t necessarily want the country out of EU, but he insisted on the fact that accession was “too soon.” 

“We do not want to shut Romania out, because it belongs to the European family. But in future we should only admit those countries into the European Union that we are certain will respect the principles of the European Union, not just on paper, but also in reality. In this respect, the example of Romania can teach us to be more cautious in the future with the further expansion of the European Union.”

Aderarea României la UE a fost prematură și pe viitor Bruxelles-ul ar trebui să fie mai ceva mai rezervat în procesul de extindere, a declarat fostul președinte al PE, Hans-Gert Pöttering, într-un interviu acordat Deutsche Welle.

”Dacă în România sunt încălcate principiile statului de drept, este dreptul, dar şi datoria ţărilor membre, a popoarelor şi a politicienilor din UE să intervină. Principiul neamestecului nu mai este valabil (...) Dacă permitem încălcarea principiilor democraţiei înseamnă că erodăm bazele Uniunii Europene. Dreptatea deţine puterea, nu puterea deţine dreptatea - aşa cum des s-a întâmplat în istoria Europei şi s-a ajuns la războaie. În ziua de azi există o justiţie pe care trebuie s-o apărăm cu toate mijloacele de care dispunem”, a spus fostul lider al PE.

Pöttering nu este de acord cu o excludere a României, dar crede că aderarea Bucureștiului la UE a fost prematură

”Trebuie să învăţăm din experienţa cu România. În mod evident, aderarea României a fost prematură. Nu vrem să excludem România fiindcă şi această ţară aparţine familiei europene. Dar, în viitor, în UE ar trebui acceptate numai statele despre care ştim sigur că vor respecta principiile UE. Nu numai pe hârtie, ci şi în realitate. Exemplul României ne-ar putea învăţa să fim ceva mai rezervaţi în privinţa procesului de extindere”, a precizat Hans-Gert Pöttering.
