Parts of the skull of a prehistoric animal and two large tusks were discovered in Ariusd locality, Covasna County, the specialists stating that these could be the remains of a mastodon or mammoth.
Demeter Laszlo, Director of the Baraolt Museum, stated on Wednesday that fragments of a skull belonging to a prehistoric animal were discovered on Tuesday near Ariusd locality. “Soil erosion brought to the surface this skull. A local man who found it informed me of this discovery. It’s the fragment of a skull and two tusks that are 25 centimeters long and approximately 11 centimeters wide,” Demeter stated.
The Director of the Baraolt Museum explained that preliminary data shows that this is the skeleton of either a mammoth or a mastodon, the possibility of these being the remains of a different animal being ruled out considering the size of the tusks. Demeter pointed out that the skeleton will be analyzed by paleontologists.
The almost intact skeleton of a mastodon discovered around four years ago in Covasna County within the Racosul de Sus coal mine is currently exhibited at the Baraolt Museum. The museum’s leadership wants to arrange a paleontology section in order to exhibit this mastodon too.

Părţi din craniul unui animal preistoric şi doi colţi de mari dimensiuni au fost descoperiţi în zona localităţii Ariuşd din judeţul Covasna, specialiştii spunând că ar putea fi vorba despre rămăşiţele unui mastodont sau mamut.
Directorul Muzeului Depresiunii Baraolt, Demeter Laszlo, a declarat, miercuri, că în zona localităţii Ariuşd au fost descoperite, marţi, fragmente din craniul unui animal preistoric.
"În urma eroziunii solului a ieşit la suprafaţă acest schelet de craniu. Un localnic care l-a găsit m-a anunţat despre această descoperire. Este vorba de un fragment de craniu şi doi colţi în lungime de 25 de centimetri şi aproximativ 11 centimetri lăţime", a spus Demeter.
Directorul Muzeului din oraşul Baraolt a explicat că primele date arată că scheletul ar fi aparţinut fie unui mamut, fie unui mastodont, fiind exclusă varianta de a fi rămăşiţele altui animal, având în vedere mărimea colţilor.
Demeter a precizat că urmează ca scheletul să fie analizat de paleontologi.
Un schelet de mastodont aproape intact, care a fost descoperit în urmă cu circa patru ani tot în judeţul Covasna, la cariera de exploatare a lignitului din Racoşul de Sus, se află în prezent la Muzeul Depresiunii Baraolt. Conducerea muzeului vrea să amenajeze o secţie de paleontologie în care să fie expus şi acest mastodont.
