President Traian Basescu stated in a conference at the Presidential Palace that he has asked Lower Chamber Speaker Valeriu Zgonea to maintain on the Lower Chamber’s order of the day the draft Constitutional amendments initiated by the Romanian President.
“The amending of the Constitution should start off from the referendum. It’s the expression of the will of the people. No politician from the current majority will be able to brush off the obligation to take the 2009 referendum into account. A validated referendum is a people’s act of will and sovereignty. Otherwise amending the Constitution is not justified,” Traian Basescu stated.
On Thursday the president sent a letter to the Lower Chamber’s leadership on the issue of the draft law on amending the Constitution that the Presidency sent in 2011. Basescu accuses the Juridical Commission of passivity and asks the Lower Chamber’s leadership to include the draft on the order of the day and to respect the results of the 2009 referendum.
In the letter sent to Lower Chamber Speaker Valeriu Zgonea, the Head of State points out that the draft law on amending the Constitution was sent to Parliament as early as 2011. Traian Basescu underscores that it is the Parliament’s duty to continue the debates and to respect the will that the people expressed in the 2009 referendum in what concerns lowering the number of MPs.

Preşedintele Traian Băsescu a susţinut într-o declaraţie de presă, la Palatul Cotroceni, că a solicitat preşedintelui Camerei Deputaţilor, Valeriu Zgonea, să menţină pe ordinea de zi a Camerei proiectul de revizuire a Constituţiei iniţiat de preşedintele României.
„Revizuirea Constituţiei trebuie să pornească de la Referendum. E expresia voinţei poporului. Niciun politican din actuala majoritate nu va putea să treacă peste obligaţia de a ţinue cont de referendumul din 2009. Un referendum validat e un act de voinţă şi suveranitate a unui popor. Altfel, revizuirea Constituţiei nu se justifică.” A declarat Traian Basescu.
Preşedintele a transmis, joi, o scrisoare conducerii Camerei Deputaţilor pe tema proiectului de lege pe care Preşedinţia l-a transmis în 2011 privind revizuirea Constituţiei. Băsescu reclamă pasivitatea Comisiei juridice şi solicită conducerii Camerei să includă proiectul pe ordinea de zi şi să respecte rezultatele referendumului din 2009.
În scrisoarea adresată de şeful statului preşedintelui Camerei Deputaţilor, Valeriu Zgonea, se precizează că proiectul de revizuire a Constituţiei a fost transmis Legislativului încă din 2011. Traian Băsescu subliniază că este de datoria Parlamentului să continue dezbaterile şi să respecte voinţa poporului exprimată la referendumul din 2009 privind reducerea numărului de parlamentari.
