Premier Victor Ponta stated on Wednesday, at the start of the government meeting, that Romania is ready to join the Schengen Area, just as the European Commission spokesperson stated, and deemed that the political situation and elections in certain countries “will represent problems when it comes to our Schengen accession.”
“Romania is ready to join Schengen. Nevertheless, the political situation, the elections in certain countries will probably represent problems when it comes to our Schengen accession. I will state on Monday, during my meeting with President Barroso, that Romania is ready for Schengen, just as the EC knows and most of the countries have stated, but now we are waiting for the elections to be over. There were elections in the Netherlands, now there are elections in other countries, in 2013, I suspect there will be elections in 2014 too. I believe that on this issue the Interior Minister should be careful to maintain all technical conditions, when the political decision will be taken in one country or the other, then maybe the personal lobbying matters too and President Basescu I believe will use his very good relation with Germany and other countries. We are prepared for Schengen, we will join Schengen when all EU states are ready,” Ponta stated.
He underlined that things have to be treated “calmly and rationally” and “the day to day battle” has to be “removed” from important issues for Romania, issues such as the Schengen accession.

" România este pregătită pentru intrarea în Schengen. Probabil însă că situaţia politică, alegerile din anumite ţări vor constitui probleme în primirea noastră în Schengen. Eu o să transmit şi luni, la întâlnirea cu preşedintele Barroso, faptul că România, aşa cum ştie şi CE şi au afirmat şi cele mai multe ţări, este pregătită de Schengen, dar acum aşteptăm să se termine alegerile. Au fost alegeri în Olanda, acum sunt alegeri în alte ţări, în 2013, bănuiesc că şi în 2014 vor fi alegeri. Eu cred că pe această temă, domnul ministru de Interne, să aveţi grijă să păstrăm toate condiţiile tehnice, când se va lua decizia politică dintr-o ţară sau alta, atunci poate contează şi lobbyul personal şi preşedintele Băsescu cred că va folosi relaţia sa foarte bună cu Germania, alte ţări, dacă mai este cazul să vorbim. Noi suntem pregătiţi pentru Schengen, când sunt pregătite şi toate ţările UE o să intrăm în Schengen", a spus Ponta.
El a subliniat că lucrurile trebuie tratate "calm şi raţional" şi că "bătălia de zi cu zi" trebuie "scoasă" din problemele importante pentru România, precum este aderarea la Schengen.
