Doing business via Google Translate: Chinese invest over 1bn euros in Romania

Chinese companies are attracted by the Romanian economy, and their investments in Romania will exceed 1 billion euros in 2012, 5 times more than 20 years ago, Pro TV reports.

The money will go to commercial lines operating in Constanta Port, telephonic equipment factories and – more recently – in the energy sector.

The Chinese will invest nearly 1 bln euros in the Rovinari energy complex, where they were invited to invest after an American company turned down a similar invitation. Faced by the American’s refusal, the manager of the energy company searched the internet and found the Chinese investors.

"The national electricity company. They were not hard to find, because they were the only ones. I sent them some emails. I wrote them in Romanian, they answered in Chinese. Then I used Google Translate and I could understand what they said. In the spring of 2010, a rather high-level Chinese delegation came to Romania,” recollects Vasile Tudorescu.

The negotiations were not easy. The Chinese had some conditions in order to come with the money, but eventually they agreed and will build a new automated energy group at Rovinari, that will double the yield of the complex by 2014 and will create over 1,000 jobs.

In Constanta, the Chinese invested in a shipping line that connects the Romanian port with Shanghai. The line will be serviced by huge container ships, 300 meters long and as high as a 10-storey building, which will transport 500 containers each week.

Another business opportunity is represented by the wine industry, to which purpose a Chinese delegation recently met Romanian authorities. Over 10,000 Chinese companies operate in Romania.

Asa ca, in port, in loc de nave obisnuite intra portcontainerele gigantice.
